Sheffield ~ S1

Standing on the River Don in South West Yorkshire on the edge of the Peak District, Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England. The city has long industrial roots and during the 12th century its prosperity depended on local iron smelting work. However, by the 14th century cutlery, silverware, and plate took over as the chief industry and Sheffield soon became famous for the quality and durability of the knives produced by the cutlers of the town. Sheffield became synonymous with fine cutlery and as technology advanced during the Industrial Revolution the city grew into a centre of engineering excellence, producing much of the country's specialist and heavy industrial machinery. The city was heavily bombed during the Second World War and much of the city was destroyed. Following the war years, despite reconstruction, the fortunes of the city suffered an economic slump owing to a decline in the demand for Sheffield steel. Gradually however Sheffield has staged a cultural and economic recovery and the city has transformed itself with the introduction of new high tech industry working alongside the remaining traditional manufacturers.

Sheffield's industrial heritage provides scope for numerous museums and visitor attractions connected with its history. Of particular note is the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet on the River Sheaf. This is a completely restored manufacturing community with millponds, water-wheels, and workshops demonstrating traditional crafts and industries. Also of interest are:

• Beauchief Abbey.
• The Botanical Gardens with their magnificent glass houses.
• The Magna Centre - an interactive heritage museum paying tribute to Sheffield steel.
• Chatsworth a magnificent stately home - the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is just thirty minutes away in the Derbyshire Peak District.

The city has excellent transport links with the rest of the country with the M60 and M67 providing ease of access to the M1 and to the surrounding cities. London is a little over two hours away by train. The city also boasts The Sheffield Supertram, an inner city light rail system opened in 1995 that provides a fast and convenient connection between Sheffields five 'park and ride' locations and the city centre, as well as the railway station and other prominent sites within the city. Sheffield also has its own City Airport and heli-port as well as being near to the international Robin Hood Airport.

For shopping, the city's old steel works area is home to the UK's largest shopping mall - The Meadowhall Centre.

Sporting facilities are of an excellent standard. The city lays claim to being the nation's 'sporting capital' and among its extensive facilities, it is home to Europe's largest artificial ski resort - The Ski Village.
