The thing that sets the Bodrum area apart from other Turkish vacation destinations is it's architecture. Turkey is of course rich in towns with attractive old neighborhoods, but few retain their traditional town structure as intact as the Bodrum Peninsula. We owe this to 1970's legislation which declared the entire area a historis preservation zone, it banned buildings of more than two and a half stories and stipulated that new construction should 'harmonize' the traditional environment. A lot of the land in the region is protected and unavailable for constrcution. There are plans for the use of this land for golf courses, which not only means that the housing prices in the area are going to increase further, but that the seasonal resorts on the peninsula will become active all year round.Â
