The name of this county originates from old English meaning the land of south Saxons. Dating from around 3,500 BC and primarily restricted to the Downs historical evidence has been found from the earliest settlements in Sussex. Well documented this county is steeped in history from Stone Age to Roman villas and Saxon Churches. Divided for administration and known as West Sussex and East Sussex with the city of Brighton and Hove this is a traditional county in the south of England. A castle dating back to the 15th century is at Herstmonceux and another well known landmark is the hill figure in chalk, the Long Man at Wilmington. Another natural feature in the area is at Romney Marsh,the Greenwich Royal Observatory and castles at Hastings and Lewes are also some of the famous landmarks alongside Arundel Castle and the famous Goodwood race course. Towns by the sea are in abundance such as Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. Lewes is the picturesque County town with Georgian houses and narrow streets. GeographySussex has a boundary to the north with Surrey, to the west with Hampshire, to the north east with Kent and the English Channel to the south. In 2000 Brighton and Hove was granted the status of City and until that time Chichester was the only city in the county. Brighton is one of the most popular and renowned seaside destinations on the south coast. The Pier, the beach of pebbles part of which is the only nudist beach in England, the Fun Fair, Brighton Royal Pavillion and the infamous Brighton rock are all national treasures. Hastings is known by every school girl and boy for the famous battle in 1066. In fact the event did take place in the nearby town of Battle and its main industry became fishing. Chicester is a small city in Sussex and the cathedral contains a shrine to St. Richard. The spire was rebuilt in the 19th century having collapsed being made of the soft local stone. The famous Chichester Festival is held here every year and is dedicated to culture and drama.
